Kindergarten

Kindergarten is a time for children to expand their love of learning, knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and to grow as a friend. Salt Creek School District 48 is proud to offer full-day kindergarten and small class sizes to maximize the growth that occurs in this first year of school.

Kindergarten Highlights

Through research-based curriculum and best instructional practice, kindergarten students develop reading, writing, and mathematical skills while exploring science, social studies, social-emotional learning, and the arts. Students will develop many skills including the following:

Instilling a love for reading is our focus. Through Really Great Reading, all students receive explicit phonics instruction. With the help of our English Language Arts curriculum, ReadyGen, students learn the concepts of print, develop phonemic awareness, and acquire comprehension strategies.

Children celebrate their writing stages. Students begin with drawing and eventually use brave spelling, stretching out the words, and listening to the sounds, to write in complete sentences.

Our math curriculum, enVision 2.0, allows opportunities for manipulation of math tools while building a concrete understanding of number concepts, addition, subtraction, shapes, graphing and collecting data, and problem-solving.

Our social studies curriculum, TCI, and science curriculum, Mystery Science, offer hands-on experiences for children to explore plants and animals, weather, force, motion, our community, and working together.

Students participate daily in social-emotional learning, gym, and twice a week in music, art, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, math).
